Manuscript Submission Guidelines - Fiction

We publish nearly any genre, but:

  1. A powerful plot is a must
  2. Memorable characters we can identify with
  3. Verify your history and science
  4. In fantasy, any magical system must be both rigorously coherent and integral to the plot, and overall the work must at least strive for originality.

Preferred length: 60,000 - 150,000 words.

Submission procedures:

DO NOT SEND Query letters. DO NOT SEND DISKS.

We do not accept submissions by email. Electronic submissions are strongly preferred. NOTE: Any viruses attached to your submission will send your file straight into the trash.

Send your manuscript by using this Submission Form

We will acknowledge receipt within 30 days of delivery. We will respond to your manuscript within 90 days. Don't expect a full critique of your work after submitting a manuscript. If yours is not accepted, we are only able to provide a few remarks explaining why it wasn't suitable for our publishing program.

Join a local writing group or association. These organizations are dedicated to helping members learn more about writing and publishing and can provide useful workshops, resource materials, advice, critiquing, and provide support as you work towards publishing your great work.

Document Format

Use Rich Text Format (.rtf) file or PDF. Any other format will be disposed of. Send a single file (do NOT break it into separate chapter files).

Include in the file:

  1. Cover Letter
  2. Your name, mailing address, email address*, telephone number, pen name if any.
  3. Include general information about yourself, such as whether you've been published before and something about your background.
  4. A synopsis - look it up in the dictionary.
  5. A two to four page outline - (optional).
  6. Cover Image (optional).
  7. Cover Treatment (optional) - including cover copy and a teaser page.
  8. Title page with name, mailing address, telephone number, pen name if any.
  9. Your manuscript.

This package gives us a first impression of you, some idea of your writing ability and whether your manuscript fits our present requirements. It is in your best interest to make this a good first impression. You must convey to us what makes your book special or unique and why we should read it over the dozens of manuscripts we receive. If your book is timely, or if you know of special markets for it, let us know.

Preparing the Manuscript

Set up your manuscript as standard 8 1/2" by 11" paper, with 1/2" margins all around.

  • NO text boxes.
  • NO sidebars
  • NO "smart quotes"/"curly quotes"
  • NO single character elipses, mdashes, etc.
  • NO Bold
  • NO justified margins
  • NO extra white space between paragraphs.

  • Use ONLY Times Roman font.
  • Use a 12-point font.
  • Use double-spacing ONLY.
  • Number each page consecutively throughout the manuscript.
  • Use Headers to place your Title, name, and page number at the top of each page.
  • Start each new chapter on a new page.
  • Center your chapter titles and/or numbers at the top of each chapter page.
  • Leave an inch of space before beginning the text.
  • Indent your paragraphs.
  • Use block or straight quotes and apostrophes, . . ., --, etc, choose and use it consistently throughout.
  • Use either underline or italics for emphasis, choose and use it consistently throughout.
  • Use scene break indicators (###, ***, etc.).
  • Use page breaks ONLY at the end of chapters.
  • Use a Spell Checker. Do not trust them to proofread your manuscript for you.
  • Use a grammar checker. Do not trust them to proofread your manuscript for you.
